As the title says.
I've been playing a lot of Midtown Madness 2 recently, and that got me thinking. The game has a surprisingly great physics engine.

I don't think any of them get it perfectly correct, nor are any that much better than any other (among the top-tier racing sims like GT, Forza, Asseto, etc).
They all do certain things very well, and fall short in other areas.

Love driving a Testarossa and crashing into a semi truck, flipping the truck over and nothing happens to my Ferrari.

Assetto Corsa, Project Cars, GTR2, GT Legends, and rFactor are all super good.

iRacing is very good. However, can be prohibitively expensive to go fast as you need a decent computer, steering wheel and $100-$300 in content to really be into it. Also, there's the complexity of a real race car's adjustability to tune it for each track .
Forza 4 is very good. Forza 5 is way too arcadey in its feel. Forza 4 is great though.

Define "Best".
If I had to pick most enjoyable it would be Forza 5 no doubt. The cars in that game feel so much more alive and ready to go compared to everything else but Turn 10's policy of "power oversteer makes everything better" isn't exactly a simulation benchmark.

Some say he painted his penis green and turned it into a car.
Others say that's totally fucking gross.
All we know is, he did the test track in less than 60 seconds with it and his name is now, "Minuteman".

My vote... Haven't spent more than a couple minutes with 5 to see the improvements.
Of course real sims are a little better, but Forza 4 is damn good.

In that case. Micro Machines on the PS1. That game simulates what racing miniature cars on a pool table is like far more accurately than say iRacing does with its cars and tracks.

It's not the most realistic, but GT2 is still my favorite balance between sim and arcade.

Assetto Corsa does a pretty good job in the physics, visual, and audio regions. We need to get an Oppo Assetto Corsa trackday going on at some point...

if you're saying most realistic ...
It's a tie between Live for Speed, Rfactor, Assetto Corsa. in my case anyway.
I like Forza's "simcade" physics, it feels realistic, but it doesn't simulate everything.
I'm also up for Midtown Madness online, 'cause why not.

The correct answers are:
1.- For time trials, Asetto Corsa.
2.- For racing (with real life rules), iRacing is unparalleled.
3.- For racing (without real life rules yet still sim-like physics, tho inferior than those above), Horizon 2 or Forza 5. The GT series just didn't do well in the PS3 generation and PC games/sims aren't as good in this category as Forzas are.
That's it really.

And since I can't edit that post, in the last category I'd buy Horizon 2 only and wait for Forza 6, which should be quite an improvement over 5 since the latter suffered considerably from being rushed and from being the first racing game for a new console.

Race 07, or GTR evo, both are great for realism, but are dated in the graphics department.

Spintires of car racing games = Live for Speed. Very accurate simulation and can run on a Pentium 4 with no issues. I'm saying this analogy because Spintires runs pegged at 60 FPS with everything maxed out on my system (AMD FX8350 with Nvidia GTX560), and it has a very good mud simulation without taxing my processor or graphics card a lot. LFS can run about 300 FPS if I overclock my GPU a bit.
